Which Car Should You Buy in Dubai to Import to Iran? A Buyer's Guide to This Year's Rules

Not every car on the Dubai market can be shipped to Iran — and most disappointment comes from buying first and reading the rules second. The right order is the reverse: learn the window, then pick the best car inside it.

The window: five constraints that decide everything

  • Value: no ceiling on the free-zone route any more — the roughly USD 8,000 minimum is a reported figure, not a confirmed rule
  • Petrol engine size: no cap — free-zone entry duty is banded instead: 6% up to 2500cc, 8% to 3000cc, 10% above (the published table is for zero-km cars)
  • Age: under 5 years — currently model 2022 or newer, moving up one year every January
  • American brands are not admitted; Korean brands now are — though a short list of supercar marques is still banned
  • GCC specification — for both climate fit and the import file; and always confirm the specific car's final eligibility with the destination zone before buying — the rules are circular-driven and change

Why hybrids are the quiet winners

The real advantage now is duty: the value ceilings are gone, so newer, better-equipped cars are open anyway, and free-zone duty is simply lower — 4% for hybrids up to 2000cc against 6% for petrol. Electric goes lower still at 2%, with no value ceiling either, if charging at the destination works for you.

Categories that work in practice

CategoryWhy it fitsBest for
Low-mileage Japanese crossovers, 2022+Lowest duty band (6% under 2500cc), parts availability in IranDaily use, easy upkeep
Mid-range GCC sedansDeep Dubai supply of 2022+ examplesLowest landed cost
Hybrids up to 2000ccNo value ceiling + 4% dutyMost car per dirham
Mid-range EVs2% duty and no value ceilingLowest possible duty

Usually outside the window: anything American, the short hyper-luxury list, and model 2021 and older. Petrol over 2500cc now qualifies — it just pays the higher 8% or 10% band — and the USD 8,000 floor is a reported minimum rather than a confirmed rule.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. 1Fix the destination first — free zone or mainland changes both the bill and the sensible choice of car.
  2. 2Price the landed cost with the calculator on the car's own page, not by feel.
  3. 3Verify model year against the car's documents, not the listing.
  4. 4Do not skip the pre-purchase inspection — repairs after shipping cost multiples.
  5. 5Plan shipping so you do not collide with the January step of the five-year rule.

Can I import an American car like a Chevrolet or Ford?

No — American brands are still not admitted to the free-zone import file; Korean brands, however, are now permitted.

What about a clean, low-mileage 2021 model?

Not importable. The rule is the model year, not the condition — under five years at entry, which currently means 2022 or newer.
